The beginnings of the game
blackjack are not exactly written in stone.
Generally speaking, the game is believed to come
from France. More specifically, it is believed
that the game stems from a French game by the
name “chemin de fer”. It is widely believed that
blackjack started to be played in French casinos
as far back as the early 1700s. At that time it
is also believed that it was called Twenty and
One (Vingt et Un).
Blackjack made it's way to
the US in the 1800s. Back then, there was even a
wager that paid 10 to 1 by the name of
Blackjack. This was when a player was dealt a
jack of spades or clubs and an ace of spades or
clubs. All black suits.
Then, back in the late
50s and even 60s cheat sheets and books were
distributed showing players how to play almost
even with the house and maybe even get the edge
on the house. The books gained the attention of
many gamblers (even though the strategies were
hard to master) and irritated the casinos. The
casinos even tried to amend the rules but
players wouldn't play so the casinos pretty much
stuck it out.
Shortly there after,
the casinos did succeed in making amendments to
the odds to be more in their favor like adding
multiple decks.
Currently, blackjack is
one of the most popular casino games. You can do
pretty well playing blackjack even though they
have added things like automatic/frequent
shuffling and the like. Many players consider it
the first table game that they have ever played
in a casino or online.
